Recommendation for Bonding with
Lord Engineered Urethane Adhesives

Lord® Engineered Urethane Adhesives offer a wide range of working times for use in diverse structural adhesive applications. The product line features two component systems with an unique balance of open time and rate of bond strength development. Consider the following guidelines when using the urethane adhesives:

Substrates

The following substrates should work well with Urethane adhesives. Prepared metals, Thermoplastics, SMC/FRP/RTM, Faom, Wood, Primed glass, Fabric, Prepared rubber, Leather.

Surface preparation

Proper surface preparation is one of the most important steps in the bonding process and can lead to adhesion problems if not followed correctly. Refer to section All for surface prep recommendations.

The surface of the substrate should be free from condensed moisture. Moisture can result in poor adhesion.

Application considerations

  1. Two part & single part adhesives - The Lord Urethane Adhesives family offer both two component systems, part "A" adhesive and part "B" curative, as well as single component moisture cure adhesives.

  2. Moisture Sensitivity - Part A of the two component system and all single component systems will react with moisture in the air. Therefore, it is necessary to keep urethane adhesives away from moisture during storage.

  3. Mixing - Two component urethane adhesives should be dispensed from Lord-Pak cartridges or from meter mix dispense (MMD) equipment. Hand mixing is not recommended.

  4. Curing - Room temperature curing can be used for all Lord urethanes. However, heat curing is recommended for best adhesion and quicker curing. Use room temperature for fast setting two component systems or single component moisture cure adhesives. Typically, 15 minutes at 200°F is recommended for heat curing.

  5. Cartridges - Many of the urethane adhesives are available in convenient cartridges. This allows for ease of mixing and application. For two component products dispense a small amount of product from the cartridge prior to attaching the mixer. This levels the plungers and makes sure that product is flowing freely from both sides of the cartridge. Next, attach the mixer and dispense a small amount of adhesive, usually about the length and width of the mixer. Then apply the adhesive on the substrate. This ensures that the adhesive being applied to the substrate is fully mixed and is at the correct ratio.
